2017 Bucket List: The Unique Places You Should Visit This Year

Since we put together our Ultimate Bucket List, we decided to put together a bucket list just for this year alone. Seeing as our Ultimate Bucket List is crazy long (isn’t everybody’s?) we put together this list for 2017 in order to see how many of these stunning places we get to check off by the end of the year and of course for you to find some unique travel places for your own bucket lists.

The first one would have to be Plettenberg Bay, located along the beautiful coast of the Western Cape in South Africa. Plett (as locals like to call it) has all the creature comforts in the form of great local restaurants and shops but still has that small town charm about it. Having been to Plett before, we are quite familiar with it but didn’t get to do everything that we wanted to the last time around.

Some of the things we are wanting to do this time around:

Visit the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary

Take a game drive in the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve

The next place that we want to tick off of our bucket list would have to be taking a trip down to Sodwana Bay, situated along the Kwazulu-Natal coast in South Africa, providing the best place for us to get our driver’s license. Darren had got his in Tofo, Mozambique but that was before computer systems were set up and having consequently lost his Diving Certificate he has to complete his diving course all over again – which gives me the opportunity of having a diving buddy to take the course with me! Although I am rather nervous to do my divers, being claustrophobic and all, I am also extremely excited to be able to dive and see the most stunning places that the underwater world has to offer!

I haven’t taken a camping trip since I was around 7 years old, and camping at music festivals don’t count. This will be my first time camping since little and I must say that I am not too keen on the whole camping idea. I mean why camp when there is an even better place to sleep – with a bed. But seeing as Darren is in the whole camping/ 4×4 business we have kitted out our Amarok with all the camping essentials we need and we are more than ready to set off. Now before we start camping in the Moremi or Kgalagadi we need to start out small and camp somewhere close by. Mountain Sanctuary  found in the Magaliesburg mountains, about 2 hours from Johannesburg makes for the perfect place to start out with the whole camping thing again.

Finally leading up to one of our final bucket list items and that would have to be visiting the untouched, wild areas of either Botswana or Namibia. Both of these places are on our Ultimate Bucket List and we would love to tick either one of these off some time this year.

Botswana having the exquisite landscape defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, provides the perfect, natural habitat for all types of game animals.

Of the main parks that we would love to visit would have to be the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve which is close to the lush Okavango Delta.

Namibia is a definite must for anyone who wants to experience the most ‘out of the ordinary’ landscape and feel like you are the only one on the planet. Being distinguished by the Namib Desert (meaning “vast place”) the surrounding areas of Namibia are made up of massive red sand dunes and embrace a diverse number of plants and animals that you will find nowhere else in the world.

The highlights and must-see places for us would have to be taking a drive over Etosha National Park‘s expansive salt pans (when it hasn’t been raining), taking the picture perfect shot of some of the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei and finally take in the beautiful views of the Damaraland and Swakopmund.

Now that we have our 2017 Bucket List, we’re going to have to start planning trips to all of these incredible places.

Lookout Southern Africa we’re coming for you!
